The Snowtown murders, South Australia, 1992 to 1999 (Bunting, Wagner, Vlassakis, Haydon)
In the book this case appears as “Railway Terrace”. The names of people and most places were changed to make the puzzle work. Below is what really happened.
Twelve people were murdered between 1992 and 1999 by a group led by John Justin Bunting. The remains of eight were found in barrels in the vault of a disused bank at Snowtown, 145 km north of Adelaide, on 20 May 1999. The victims were Clinton Trezise, Ray Davies, Suzanne Allen, Michelle Gardiner, Vanessa Lane, Thomas Trevilyan, Gavin Porter, Troy Youde, Frederick Brooks, Gary O'Dwyer, Elizabeth Haydon and David Johnson.
Bunting was convicted of eleven murders and Robert Wagner of ten; both were sentenced on 29 October 2003 to life without parole. James Vlassakis pleaded guilty to four murders and received life with a 26-year non-parole period. Mark Haydon was convicted of assisting and was released on parole in 2024. The investigation turned on welfare payments still being collected in the victims' names.
How the real detectives cracked it
In the real case, the disappearance of Elizabeth Haydon in November 1998 led police to welfare payments that were still being drawn for people who had not been seen in years, to ATM withdrawals clustered in Adelaide's northern suburbs, and to phone calls made to Centrelink by men impersonating the missing. On 20 May 1999 police entered a disused State Bank building on Railway Terrace, Snowtown, and found six barrels in the vault containing the remains of eight people. Two more victims were found buried at a former home in Salisbury North, and earlier remains found at Lower Light were linked to the group.
John Bunting and Robert Wagner were convicted in September 2003 after a trial of almost twelve months, the longest in South Australian history, and sentenced to life without parole. James Vlassakis pleaded guilty to four murders and gave evidence for the prosecution. Mark Haydon was convicted of assisting. About $97,200 in welfare payments had been collected in the victims' names.
