The murder of Peter Falconio, Northern Territory, 2001 (Bradley John Murdoch)
In the book this case appears as “Sparks From Your Exhaust”. The names of people and most places were changed to make the puzzle work. Below is what really happened.
On 14 July 2001, British travellers Peter Falconio, 28, and Joanne Lees, 27, were stopped on the Stuart Highway near Barrow Creek by a man who claimed sparks were coming from their Kombi's exhaust. Falconio was shot; Lees was bound but escaped and hid in the bush for about five hours before flagging down a road train.
Bradley John Murdoch was convicted by a unanimous jury in Darwin on 13 December 2005 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a 28-year non-parole period. His appeals were dismissed in 2007. He died in custody on 15 July 2025. Peter Falconio's body has never been found; a $500,000 reward for information remains open.
How the real detectives cracked it
In the real case, the Alice Springs truck-stop camera captured a man and a white Toyota four-wheel drive with a canopy at 12:38 am on 15 July 2001. Police then worked through owners of similar Toyotas. Bradley John Murdoch, a drug courier who ran the Broome to South Australia route, was interviewed in November 2001 and released.
In August 2002 Murdoch was arrested in South Australia on unrelated charges and his DNA was taken. It matched blood on the back of Joanne Lees' T-shirt, DNA on the Kombi gear stick, and DNA on the home-made handcuffs. A Darwin jury convicted him of murdering Peter Falconio on 13 December 2005. He was sentenced to life with a 28-year non-parole period, lost every appeal, and died in custody in July 2025 without ever saying where Peter's body is.

A word about respect
These were real people, and the victims had families, many of whom are still here. We have kept to the public record and left out the gore on purpose. If you share this page, please share it the way you would want your own family talked about.
